I downloaded and ran the default installer from the main iTunes website. A message pops up telling me to quit this installation and download the 64 bit version of the installer for my 64 bit operating system. I think to myself, "Cool. Apple has recompiled iTunes specifically for the 64 bit version of the new Windows 7 operating system.
It is only the installer that is 64 bit! Too bad I do not have an iPod. And, to top it all off, when the installer asked if I wanted to automatically keep my software up to date, I declined. Imagine my surprise when I found the check box for "Check for updates automatically" in preferences checked.
I did run into an issue with my iTunes directory that existed prior to my installation of Windows 7. I have a separate hard drive set aside for my music. After installing iTunes, I could no longer edit information for my CDs like album title or artist. I could type in the fields and click OK but nothing would change.
I suspected a security rights issue and I fixed it by taking ownership of the drive from my administrative account. Goto 'Computer' from the start menu, right click on the drive and choose properties.
Click on the 'Security' tab. Click 'Advanced' near the bottom. The 'Advanced Security Settings' windows will open. Click on the 'Owner' tab. Click 'Edit' near the bottom. Pick the user you want to be the owner of this drive and check the box 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects' and click 'Apply'. You can also do this off of the iTunes directory instead of the entire hard drive.
But, I would need to be convinced why you wouldn't want full ownership of the drive. Now when I'm in iTunes, I can edit the information for the albums to my hearts content. The other two pieces of software installed without a hitch. However, my SETI downloads continue to fail even though the SETI website indicates they fixed a problem with networking equipment over the holiday weekend.
